About Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

The Sanctuary’s story begins in the early 2000s when rhinoceros populations in Uganda tragically reduced to zero due to poaching. Furthermore to reverse this devastating trend and reintroduce rhinos to their native habitat. These were the Rhino Fund Uganda (RFU) partnered with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and several international conservation organizations.

In 2005, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established on approximately 70 square kilometers of land in the Nakasongola District. More so positioning itself as a critical component of the Rhino Fund Uganda’s rhino reintroduction program. The sanctuary has a favorable habitat and security measures that would ensure the safety and well-being of the rhinos.
